A studio in Germasogeia, or I come to you

The studio is one room in Germasogeia, set up for the work rather than for the look of it: a chair at working height, a window on one side, a mirror you can see your own skin in, and everything within reach. It suits a trial, an evening look, a shoot, or anyone who would rather leave the house and sit somewhere quiet for an hour. It is a home studio, so the street and the door go out once a date is booked, not before.

On location is the other half of the week. When there is a party in the room, a dress on a hanger and a photographer arriving before you are finished, moving everyone across the city helps nobody. I come with the kit, my own light and my own extension lead, and the morning happens where you are already standing. A hotel suite on the seafront and a villa in the hills both work; the room only has to hold a table, a window and a socket.

Where Limassol weddings happen

Limassol weddings sit in four kinds of place, and each one changes the morning before anyone talks about the look. What I need from you is not a venue name but which of the four it is, and how far it stands from the room you are getting ready in.

• The marina and the old town: small rooms, low ceilings, a ceremony within walking distance. Getting ready and married on the same street takes the drive out of the schedule, and with it the twenty minutes of slack a drive quietly provides.
• The seafront hotels along the strip toward Amathus: bright suites, air conditioning that works, sockets in sensible places, and a lift full of guests at the wrong moment. Ask for a room facing the sea if there is a choice, because that side has the light the photographs get taken in.
• Private villas in the hills above the city: space, quiet and a terrace, but bathroom lighting instead of a mirror and one socket behind a sofa. Twenty to thirty minutes down to a ceremony on the coast, on roads slower than they look on a map.
• The wine villages inland: cooler air, stone rooms, small windows. The makeup is built for photographs taken outside rather than for how it reads in the room, and the drive back down to the reception counts twice if you want photographs in two places.

How the morning is timed when there is no road

A bride takes two to three hours with hair, and every other person adds thirty to forty minutes. Working in my own city I can start at the hour the schedule actually needs, because there is no drive to protect at the front of it. The running order, who should be in the room and when the photographer should arrive are all set out in how a wedding morning runs, and in Limassol the numbers are the same. What changes is that an early start can be genuinely early.

In July and August the heat sets the start more than the ceremony time does. The base gets built in a room with the air conditioning running, not on a terrace at eleven in the morning, however good the light looks out there. Finish while the room is still cool, then let it settle before the dress goes on, because the jump from cold to hot is what makes a base move. A late afternoon ceremony usually means an earlier finish and an agreed touch-up window rather than a later start.

Makeup that survives the seafront in summer

The strip between the marina and Amathus is the humid part of the city. The sea keeps the air wet, so sweat sits on the skin instead of evaporating, and salt reaches the lash line before anyone has swum. That is a preparation problem rather than a setting-spray problem, and it gets settled at the trial: hydration that has fully absorbed, two thin layers instead of one heavy one, powder only where the face shines, waterproof rather than water-resistant on the eyes. Sunscreen belongs in the same conversation, since a mineral filter reflects camera flash and can read grey against your neck. Not only weddings: evening, shoots and lessons in Limassol

Most of the calendar is weddings, but not all of it. Evening and event makeup takes about an hour and a half in the studio and books on its own, for a dinner, a birthday or a work party, without any of the wedding scaffolding around it. Shoots are different work again: content days, lookbooks and editorial, where the brief comes from the photographer's lighting and the face is built to hold up close on a screen. For those, send the moodboard and the shot list rather than a description of the look.

Lessons are one to one in the studio, with your own products on the table.
